Teaching in the UK

Are you looking to advance your career to the next level? Have you considered moving to the UK? We’re looking for experienced, passionate teachers who want to start their UK teaching journey in September 2025. Overseas teachers form an integral part of the overall UK education system and are highly regarded; we have specialist recruitment consultants to find you the right teaching role whilst supporting you throughout (and beyond) your move.

Opportunities Available

Our overseas teachers are incredibly important, bringing new approaches, excitement and adventure to our children and young people. By becoming a teacher in the UK, you can make a real and lasting difference to these brilliant young people.

There are fantastic opportunities for newly qualified teachers, as well as experienced practitioners in secondary education – in the UK this is across the age ranges of 11-18. There is a particular shortage of staff in the following subjects: STEM (Science, Technology, Economics and Maths), Design & Technology (specifically Resistant Materials/Woodwork), Business Studies, Music Studies, MFL (French/Spanish), and Computing/Computer Science. We are also keen to hear from those who work in support roles as well as educators with SEN qualifications and experience.

Alongside plentiful opportunities for overseas teachers in globally renowned education systems due to UK teacher shortages, there are many fantastic benefits that teaching in our country can provide candidates. Competitive salaries, a lower cost of living and generous pension scheme provides financial security whether you’re saving for travels, or looking for a secure retirement. Boasting up to 13 weeks of holiday, teachers in the UK can enjoy key holidays off, offering an attractive work-life balance. Finally, the multicultural UK education system provides brilliant professional development opportunities for its educators, often funded by schools or local authorities, allowing teachers to continuously improve their skills and advance their careers.

Let's get to know you

Making your transition to the UK a breeze

Edgware Associates has over ten years’ experience placing teachers in roles they love, enabling them to flourish as educators and as individuals. Our consultants are not generalists; we work in subject-specific areas so you’ll always be connected with the right market specialist. We have extensive experience of working with overseas teachers and we’re on hand to provide support and guidance throughout your recruitment process and relocation. You will have a dedicated consultant to guide you through the whole journey from the first call to your arrival in the UK, and the start of your new adventure. Before all of that though, we’re here to listen, and learn. We get to know you, to understand what motivates you and gain insight into your future career aspirations. Once we understand all of this, we can help to find the right opportunity for you.

Could you be a perfect match?

Though not pre-requisites to candidates (so don’t let it stop you from applying if you don’t have them) the following can help you stand out from the crowd and make an impression for hiring managers in the UK education sector:

  • Qualifications: having a relevant degree or Masters (BSc, MSc or PHD) to the subject you’re applying for, alongside a teaching qualification (PGCE, QTS and Diploma in education are preferred here).
  • Education: certain education systems are comparable to the UK’s, for example, The Middle East, Australia, South Africa and North America all translate well.
  • Location: there are certain countries from where it is easier to gain QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) in the UK. The lists and further information can be found on the GOV.uk website.
  • Experience: proven experience in a role for a period of time, and evidence of progression, as well as experience in Independent Schools abroad are highly sought after in the UK.

Right to teach in the UK

If you hold a British Dual Passport, you can start applying immediately; all you will need is the relevant DBS and safeguarding checks, we can sort those for you. Guidance for non-UK citizens who are qualified teachers outside the UK is slightly different. Information on what you need to do next can be found here.

Location, Location, Location

Most of our teaching roles are located in Britain’s vibrant cities of London, (including the surrounding counties of Hertfordshire, Surrey, Kent, Essex and Berkshire) Birmingham, Nottingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Bristol. If travel is your thing, the UK is the gateway to a vast amount of destinations within Europe. One weekend you could be flying off to Italy, the next Spain, or France, all only a couple of hours away, another you might explore the UK’s wealth of historical landmarks, museums, tourist attractions and entertainment options.

National Curriculum

You may find it useful to look through the Secondary UK National Curriculum and see how it compares to what you have been teaching; it could be similar to what you are used to and for the majority of subjects easily transferable.
